Eavestrough Repair

Your eavestrough (sometimes called a gutter) is one of the most important components of your roof. If you do not have an eavestrough system that works perfectly, then it won’t be long before your home starts suffering from leaks and structural damage.

Thankfully, most issues with eavestroughs can easily be repaired when you have the right roofing team to work with. Here, you are going to learn not only about what issues can be caused by a damaged eavestrough, but also how an experienced roofing repair company will be able to fix these issues.

What Issues Can Eavestrough Damage Cause?

The job of an eavestrough is simple. It will move water away from your roof and onto the ground. If your roof didn’t have an eavestrough, then water could potentially start to pool. This could ruin the structural integrity of the roof, or allow water to start leaking into the property.

Water leaks are never a good thing. If you are lucky, they will cause a bit of dampness which can easily be cleaned up. If you are unlucky (or let that dampness get out of control), then mold will start to form on the walls. This is dangerous.

If the eavestrough isn’t fixed and water is allowed to continue to creep into the house, then this could compromise your property’s foundations. It could damage the electrics. It could even result in a complete roof replacement.

Luckily, most of the problems with a damaged eavestrough are long-term. If you have a damaged eavestrough and you fix it quickly, then you could save yourself a rather hefty amount of cash in home repair bills.

How Is Eavestrough Damage Repaired?

When you work with a repair company for your eavestrough repair, the job will always begin with an inspection of the eavestrough and the surrounding structure. In many cases, while the damage to the eavestrough may seem rather minor, the problem may have been ignored for so long, the structural damage to the property has already begun. A good roofing repair company will be able to help rectify that problem.

Of course, the main goal is to get to the bottom of the issues with the eavestrough and get those fixed.

Blocked, Dirty Eavestroughs

Eavestroughs become blocked. It isn’t just water that flows into an eavestrough. You will also find leaves, twigs, and even small animals. While a lot of this will flow out with the water, some of it remains.

Over time, an eavestrough will start to become clogged up. The water won’t flow as freely through the guttering system. This results in water starting to pool in the eavestrough. Eventually, that water has to go somewhere, and this could be back in the direction of the roof. Most moisture issues in the home are often caused by clogged eavestroughs.

Thankfully, this is one of the easiest problems to deal with. When you have blocked eavestroughs, most of what is clogging up the eavestrough will be manually removed. The rest of it will be flushed away by the eavestrough repair company.

Don’t wait until your eavestroughs have become fully blocked, though. You should have your eavestrough unclogged at least twice per year to keep them in perfect working order.

Cracked Eavestroughs

Over time, eavestroughs can start to develop small cracks and chips. This is less common on the older eavestroughs (normally constructed from metal or aluminum), but if you have a modern PVC eavestrough, then it will eventually start to crack.

As you can probably imagine, these cracks will end up preventing the free flow of water. The water will end up leaking out in places that you don’t want it to leak out.

Luckily, cracked eavestroughs are also easy to deal with when the issue is caught early. Your eavestrough repair team will come armed with special fillers to help fill in the cracks and chips on your eavestrough.

These special fillers will be water and weather-resistant. This means that they could potentially last as long as your eavestrough does.

Disconnected Eavestrough Sections

For ease of maintenance, eavestroughs will often be constructed in sections. There are concrete eavestroughs that are not, but these are rarely found on residential properties.

While an eavestrough will be solidly built, it isn’t uncommon for heavy winds and rain to knock them loose. It may take a few years for them to be knocked loose enough for the parts to separate, but it can happen.

How eavestrough repair happens here will be dependent on the extent of the damage. Some problems can be tackled easily, while others may require a bit more skill and expertise.

If the eavestrough is only slightly loose, then chances are that everything can be screwed back together. There will be a quick inspection to ensure that there are no cracks that need to be filled in.

If the eavestrough section fell to the floor when it became separated from the rest of the eavestrough, then it may be seriously damaged. In many cases, this means that this particular eavestrough section will need to be replaced.

Unless you have a particularly unique eavestrough on your property, your repair team will likely be able to find a like-for-like part. This means nobody will ever know that you have had to replace a section of your eavestrough!

Improper Eavestrough Pitch

In order to encourage water to flow away from a roof and toward the ground, an eavestrough needs to be installed at a very specific angle. Generally speaking, for each 10-feet of eavestrough, the angle needs to go down by around 4-inches. You don’t want that water flowing too fast or too slowly.

Over time, wind, rain, and build-up in the eavestrough will cause the pitch of the eavestrough to be slightly off. An eavestrough repair team will be able to reposition the eavestrough to get water flowing correctly again.

Inadequate Eavestrough System

When homes are built, they are often built to a budget. Quite often, this means doing things as cheaply as possible. This can result in inadequate guttering being installed.

While this isn’t a repair job as such, most eavestrough repair staff will treat it as a repair.

Poorly installed eavestroughs may have trouble transporting water away from the roof. This may be because they are incorrectly positioned, or because the eavestrough isn’t large enough for the water that it needs to be dealt with.

How this problem is tackled will be based upon the extent of the problem. Poor positioning will involve the installed eavestrough being moved. If the size of the eavestrough is inadequate for the amount of water falling, then it will need to be replaced.

Sagging Eavestrough

If eavestroughs are not cleaned out for a while, they may start to sag. Even when the sediment build-up has been removed, the sagging in the eavestrough may remain.

Sagging is caused by the eavestrough being too heavy. When the eavestrough is holding too much weight, it will start to pull away from the wall and other sections of the eavestrough. This can create breaks or incorrect angles in the guttering system.

A sagging eavestrough is normally rectified by the repair team tightening up a few bolts, or installing some spacers at key parts of the eavestrough system.

Wear & Tear On Eavestrough

Eavestroughs are not built to last forever. Even if you have one of the more modern, robust PVC options, they will eventually start to wear down. If you haven’t replaced your eavestrough in 20-30 years, then it may be time to think about having the whole eavestrough system replaced.

It is normally timer to have your eavestrough replaced if the problems start to stack up. For example, if you are starting to use more and more filler to cover up any cracks and holes. It may also be time to replace the system if there is a build-up of sediment that cannot be removed easily.

The replacement of a worn-down eavestrough is something that can only be tackled by a professional. Not only is it dangerous to remove and install a new eavestrough, but it must also be replaced correctly. This means ensuring that there is adequate guttering installed, as well as ensuring that the eavestrough is at the right pitch.
